Why I support Tinkerbell 100%

Mina has started to express an interest in things that little girls tend to express interest in. Dolls, for instance. And of course my lipstick and makeup brushes. On Friday, while trick-or-treating, I was SHOCKED to hear Mina point out a "Princess." Now, she has done this in passing before, but I figured it would just go away. Yeah... No.

So I decided to be proactive. Damon and I decided early on that we would like to encourage Fairies instead of Princesses for a couple of reasons. The main one being that Fairies are pretend, and whimsical. Princesses are real and difficult to brush off as make-believe.

Disney has concocted a new realm that plays straight into the hearts of those followers of the Lord of the Rings- Those who might, on occasion, like to dress up in fantasy garb and prance about. Those parents who are just like me. This genre even boasts the plucky, heart-warming music reminiscent of celtic dances and renaissance festivals. Disney "Fairies" is a blatant attempt to steal my child-like heart.

On Saturday, I bought Mina the Tinkerbell/Fairies movie. The first in a long line I am sure. I was pleased to see the cover art's rich greens and vibrant florals. A far cry from the pepto-bismol pink barfed all over anything Barbie or Princess related.

I watched the first half with Mina, and discovered that Tinkerbell is a "Tinker" fairy. There are all kinds of fairies- water fairies, light fairies, earth fairies, etc... What does a Tinker fairy do? It builds things. Tinkerbell is an ENGINEER.

HOLY CRAP! I am so excited. Damon and I want to encourage math and science, as much as possible. Of course we want to foster the arts as well, but we hope to instill a love of learning in Mina, and I am quite happy to say that Tinkerbell fits right into those plans.

So, that right there is my lengthy, over-thought explanation of why I 100% support Tinkerbell.
