A couple of weeks ago, one of my mamma friends sent me a link to her friend's handmade dolls. They are Waldorf dolls- made of natural materials (like wool which causes the doll to warm a bit when you hold them), and they have fairly vague expressions so your little one can place his or her own emotions on them. Anyways- these dolls were beautiful, simple, but VERY expensive. The site owner had a link to the company she uses for making her dolls http://dancingraindolls.com/
I clicked and fell in love with the idea of making Mina a doll. Damon was VERY supportive. Apparently he does not share my affinity for cabbage patch dolls.
So a couple days later I ordered a "My Baby Kit." It arrived on Monday night and tonight I am done with the doll. Here she is in her newborn glory- (You will have to forgive the dress- I have not settled on what to make, so this is a silly wrap of fabric)

This doll is the perfect size for a wee person. She has a nice soft warm body and I scented a little bit of the wool with my favorite vanilla perfume oil. The pattern and directions were easy enough to follow, though I did stumble a few times along the way. My only "complaint" is that the hair is a bit more golden than I wanted and she is in need of more hair at the back of her head (I should have gotten an extra ball of yarn) But the type of crocheted cap can be replaced should Mina someday want one with more reddish hair- or perhaps something more crazy like purple or orange hair. So thats easy enough.
I really REALLY enjoyed making this doll. I have been a bit out of sorts at night and this gave me a project I could do while watching tv and relaxing with Damon. It was a bit on the expensive side, but I feel like I have made something more special than money can buy.
I am very proud of my first doll- I can't wait to see Mina's face when she opens it on Krismas morning.
