We just returned from my official diabetes education appointment. Though the hospital where I plan to give birth is not the prettiest or the most hi-tech, I have been very thankful for the service I have gotten from health care providers (minus the evil sono-tech). My appointment today was thorough, kind, and optimistic.
I learned that the going hypothesis is that the baby's growth hormone knocks my insulin back and causes extra blood sugar for me and for my baby. The effects of uncontrolled blood sugar on the baby include large size, possible hypoglycemia, and possible reduction in lung development (though I have not found a whole lot to back up the lung development part). I was then informed of the way in which we will handle my particular case... I am to eat 2200 calories a day (whoo hoo) and spread out 195 grams of carbohydrate throughout the day, according to the dietitian's plan.
By far the most exciting thing is that I was ENCOURAGED to eat my nightly ice cream- but it should be of a fair portion size, and there will probably not be much hot fudge going on. And additionally, I was encouraged to try the full fat versions because they tend to be lower in carbs. WHEEEEEEEE!!!
Overall, the news was encouraging and the guidelines do not seem overly strict or difficult. It will still take some getting used to, but this is totally doable. And if my last two readings were anything to shout about, I am already on track... We meet again next Monday to confirm that I am doing things right, and we will be one step closer to having a healthy baby. HUZZAH!
